Edmonton Bridge Banner Permits: Overpass Locations, Sizes, Materials and Requirements

Planning to promote a charitable campaign, community initiative or public event with a bridge banner in Edmonton?

The City of Edmonton operates a Bridge Banner Program that provides eligible organizations with free advertising space at approved city overpass locations. However, banners cannot simply be produced and installed wherever space appears to be available. Organizations must meet the eligibility requirements, request a permit and follow the conditions assigned to their approved location.

This guide summarizes the City of Edmonton information available at the time of publication. Always confirm the latest requirements directly with the City before approving artwork, ordering a banner or arranging installation.

Who Can Apply for an Edmonton Bridge Banner Permit?

The Edmonton Bridge Banner Program is intended to support charitable organizations, non-profit groups and public events. It is not a general commercial advertising program.

Applicants must have an active registration through either:

  • The Government of Alberta Corporate Registry System, commonly referred to as CORES

  • The Canada Revenue Agency as an active charity

Organizations that may qualify include community associations, schools, registered societies, charities, sports and recreation clubs, faith-based organizations, arts and cultural groups, volunteer organizations, educational or environmental organizations and Alberta-approved farmersโ€™ markets.

A business sponsoring an eligible event may be able to receive recognition on the banner, but the application should be submitted through the qualifying organization. Sponsor content and commercial recognition should be confirmed with the City before the artwork is finalized.

How Do You Apply for an Edmonton Bridge Banner?

Applications are submitted through the City of Edmontonโ€™s online Bridge Banner Program request form.

Applicants are asked to provide their preferred dates and bridge-banner location. Space is limited and approval is not guaranteed, so organizations should apply before committing to production or publicly announcing the location.

The Cityโ€™s public request page does not currently state a fixed minimum application lead time. Applying early gives the City time to review eligibility, insurance, location availability and any technical requirements connected to the selected overpass.

Do not print the banner while the application is still pending.

How Long Can an Edmonton Bridge Banner Be Displayed?

An approved organization may receive permits for a total of up to eight locations during a calendar year.

Each approved location may be used for no more than 14 days, and consecutive display terms are not permitted. Banners may only be placed at approved road-right-of-way locations under an issued permit.

Organizations planning a multi-location campaign should identify all requested locations and dates as early as possible rather than assuming the banner can be moved from bridge to bridge without additional approval.

Edmonton Bridge Banner Insurance Requirements

Applicants must provide a certificate showing at least $2 million in general liability insurance

Confirm the required wording, policy dates and insured parties with the City or your insurance provider. The coverage should remain valid throughout the installation, display and removal period.

Missing or incorrectly prepared insurance documentation may delay approval.

Edmonton Bridge Banner Size Requirements

Unlike Calgaryโ€™s overpass-banner program, the City of Edmontonโ€™s main request page does not publish one standard size that applies across every approved location.

Edmonton maintains separate Bridge Banner Program guidelines, and banners may only be placed at approved locations. Practically, that means the finished dimensions should be confirmed for the specific overpass before artwork or production begins.

Do not assume that Calgaryโ€™s minimum length, maximum length or one-metre height requirement will also be accepted in Edmonton.

Before ordering an Edmonton bridge banner, obtain written confirmation of:

  • The exact finished width and height

  • The usable graphic area

  • Any clearance required around the railing or structure

  • Whether the dimensions vary by location

  • The approved attachment points

  • Any restrictions affecting the back or edges of the banner

Producing the banner before the location is approved can result in resizing costs or a banner that cannot be installed.

Material and Finishing Requirements

A bridge banner is exposed to more wind and structural stress than a typical banner attached to a building or temporary fence.

The Cityโ€™s current technical guidelines and permit conditions should determine the final construction. The public request page does not provide one universal material, grommet spacing or fastening specification for every location.

Before production, confirm:

  • The approved outdoor banner or mesh material

  • The required finished size

  • Whether hems or reinforced edges are required

  • Grommet size and spacing

  • Whether webbing or additional reinforcement is needed

  • The approved fastening system

  • Whether wind relief is required or permitted

  • Any special requirements for winter installations

Mesh material may help reduce wind resistance in some applications, while solid banner material may provide stronger colour and image reproduction. The correct choice depends on the Cityโ€™s requirements, the bridge structure, banner size and expected exposure.

Standard promotional-banner construction should not automatically be treated as sufficient for an overpass installation.

Edmonton Bridge Banner Design Recommendations

Bridge banners must communicate with people moving past them quickly. A design that looks clear on a computer screen may become unreadable when viewed from a vehicle.

For the strongest result:

  • Communicate one primary message

  • Use a bold, highly legible typeface

  • Create strong contrast between the text and background

  • Keep the event name and date prominent

  • Use a short website address

  • Avoid script fonts and thin lettering

  • Limit paragraphs, sponsor logos and small details

  • Use photography only when it supports the message at a distance

The Cityโ€™s public request page does not list the same minimum letter heights published by Calgary. Confirm whether Edmontonโ€™s current guidelines or your approved location include additional lettering or layout requirements.

A strong bridge banner usually needs only an event name, an essential date and one clear call to action.

Installation and Removal Requirements

Do not assume that receiving permission to display a banner automatically authorizes any person to access the bridge or perform the installation.

The permit and current City guidelines should identify who is responsible for installing and removing the banner, how it must be attached and whether additional traffic or road-right-of-way approvals are required.

Edmontonโ€™s Traffic Bylaw prohibits occupying or using a road right-of-way without an appropriate City permit. Permit holders are also required to comply with all conditions attached to the permit.

Before scheduling installation, confirm:

  • Who is authorized to complete the work

  • The approved attachment method

  • Whether lane, sidewalk or pathway control is required

  • The permitted installation and removal times

  • Whether specialized access equipment is needed

  • The date by which the banner must be removed

  • Who is responsible for responding to damage or severe weather

Installation should never interfere with traffic, pedestrians or the safe operation of the roadway.

How Much Does an Edmonton Bridge Banner Permit Cost?

The City describes the Bridge Banner Program as providing free advertising space for charitable organizations and agencies.

Free space does not necessarily mean that the entire project is free. The organization may still be responsible for costs related to:

  • Artwork and design

  • Banner production

  • Insurance

  • Installation and removal

  • Access equipment

  • Replacement of a damaged banner

Confirm all responsibilities and potential charges with the City when the location is approved.
